UPVC Window handles and the different variations.
Espag Window handles. These window handles are found on the more modern UPVC windows. The window handle spindle turns an internal drive which locks the window when the handle is turned. All espag handles are fixed by means of a window handle bolt which can vary in length according to the spindle that comes out of the back of the handle. The spindle(A) is available in variable lengths and you should measure your old window handle to determine which size is needed. Take a look at the picture at the side to see if your handle is an espag handle.
Cockspur window handles.
Cockspur window handles tend to be found on the older type of UPVC windows. The cockspur window handle locks by way of a part of the handle catching onto striker plates or wedges. These wedgesstick on to the window frame by super glue and also clip into holes. The cockspur handle is available in different stack heights and this must be measured carefully when ordering(measuring guide). Cockspur handles are fitted by using self tapping window screwsinstead of bolts like espag window handles. You will also find cockspur handles on some aluminium windows, these usually have a stack height of 9mm but the availability of different coulours is limited due to demand not being as high.
Tilt and turn window handles are a different style altogether to the handles mentioned in the above paragraphs. The tilt and turn handle is designed to move through 180 degreees which is needed to operate a tilt and turn window. These handles are fixed to the window by window bolts and the spindles lengths do not vary as much as espag handles.
