How do I measure uPVC window hinges?
Measure the length of the hinge (8", 12", 16" or 20") and the stack height (13mm or 17mm). The stack height is the distance from the base bar to the top of the mounting plate.
What’s the difference between 13mm and 17mm stack height?
13mm is lower profile, 17mm raises the sash slightly. Picking the wrong one may stop the window sealing correctly. We stock a simple hinge packer thats fits all our hinges to make sure you are always covered.
What’s the difference between top-hung and side-hung hinges?
- Top-hung – hinge fixed at the top, window pushes out from the bottom. Common on bathrooms or upstairs windows.
- Side-hung – hinges down the side, window opens like a door. Used for larger openings or fire escape windows.
Always match the orientation of your existing hinge when ordering replacements.
Which type do I need: standard, egress, easy-clean or restrictor?
Standard suits most homes. Egress allows fire escape, Easy-clean lets you clean the outer pane, and Restrictor limits opening for child safety.
Are uPVC window hinges universal?
Not strictly, but most follow common sizes. If you match length, stack height and type, replacements are usually straightforward.

- Top Hung – The handle is at the bottom; sash opens vertically outwards.
- Restricted – Built-in restrictors limit how far the sash opens. Ideal for child safety.
- Fire Escape – Designed to open wide for emergency escape and easy cleaning from inside.
