Top hung window hinges

How do I know if my window is top-hung?

If the hinges are on the side of the sash and the window pushes out from the bottom, it’s top-hung. The handle is usually on the bottom rail.

What sizes are available?

Common lengths are 8″, 10″, 12″ and 16″. Small bathroom vents use 8–10″; wider sashes use 12–16″. Match your existing hinge length for best geometry.

13 mm or 17 mm stack height?

Match what you already have. 13 mm is lower profile; 17 mm raises the sash slightly. The wrong stack can cause poor sealing or fouling.

Can I use restrictors?

Yes, restrictors limit the bottom edge opening for safety/wind. Choose a model with an override if full opening is sometimes needed.

Recommended screws/fixings

• Stainless steel countersunk screws only.
• 4.0–4.8 mm diameter, 16–25 mm length depending on profile.
• Use all fixing holes for a secure fit.

How do I set the friction?

Adjust the small friction screw on each hinge evenly so the vent stays where you leave it but still closes smoothly. Don’t over-tighten.

Do I need heavy-duty hinges?

For large/heavy/triple-glazed vents, choose a heavy-duty hinge and check the rated max vent weight/width.
